Literacy  Year 5

Pupils will begin the new term working on Classic Narrative Poetry, in particular 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes.  Pupils will consider the difference between literal and figurative language, explore the characters through hot-seating,  and write a diary from the point of view of one of the characters.  To complete the unit, they will work in groups to perform a section of the poem, evaluating one anothers performances.

Following their SATs tests in May, pupils will complete a unit of work called 'Dramatic Conventions' in which they will learn more about how scripts are created for TV and Radio.

Literacy Y6

Y6s will be working towards their SATs tests.  They will be revising different text types and how to organise them. They will be marking their written work against success criteria to see where they need to improve.  To help with their reading, they will be looking at past papers.  They will need to be focussed and hard working.  We will finish reading 'Small Change for Stuart' and 'The Thirteen Treasures'.

AS Y6 2

Pupils will continue to prepare for SATs. They will revise all areas of Maths including: Number, Shape Space and Measures, Handling Data, Problem solving, mental maths and calculator work. Planning will reflect the learning needs of individual and groups of pupils.

All Year 6 pupils have log-ins for IXL. This on-line resource will be used to supplement learning within the classroom.

A.Mason. Y61

Main areas will be: Number, Shape Space and Measures, Handling Data, Problem Solving, Mental Maths and Calculator Work.

The group will continue to use Abacus Evolve and aim to cover the following blocks:

Science

In Science the pupils will cover Unit 5B - Life Cycles - specifically plant life cycles. They will learn to name and explain the functions of parts of a flower and be able to describe the processes of pollination, fertilisation, seed dispersal and germination.

DT

Unit 6B - please click here for further details.

The Design Technology challenge this half - term will be to design and make a fun mascot suitable for a team or supporter visiting the 2012 London Olympics.

After investigation of different textile products and  how they are constructed, decorated and presented, each child will design and make a suitable mascot of thier own. The pattern for this will be created by the children. After investigation into different ways of decorating fabric they will add detail to the surface of their work. The textile work will involve stitching by hand and sewing machine.

ICT - next half term

Then they will learn how to use an object based graphics package to produce visual images and models. Unit 5A.

They will then apply this knowledge to make a collage to link with their DT work.

In weekly Numeracy lessons where a group is timetabled for the ICT suite, work will focus on Y5 and Y6 units - Spreadsheets.

Unit 5A - please click here for further details.

Unit 5D - please click for more details.

Unit 6B - please click here for more details
